BASSI BAKAMBI, ‘Women Who Coordinate,’ began in 2013 following the dream of three women to create an all-female rumba orchestra. A symbol of unity, determination, and artistic magic, their deeply rooted music symbolises the struggles, joys, and commitment to promoting African women.
For the first time in the history of Rumba, this music, listed as UNESCO World Heritage, becomes, through the beauty of this reappropriation, a matrimony, reinterpreted amongst women. These same women who have inspired the great masters of Rumba.
They present themselves as heiresses of the great schools: Rochereau, Franco, Dr Nico, Sam Mangwana, Papa Wemba. BASSI BAKAMBI take us on a journey through the great history of Congolese Rumba, from the late 1960s to the mid-1980s, offering us an exceptional panorama.
Spotted in the DRC during the Kongo Music Expo in June 2025 by Sylvain DARTOY (co-founder and production director of Wax Booking), they closed the event by setting the local and international audience on fire. Their infectious energy and stage presence show that they are now ready to conquer the world.
